Sheb Wooley
Shelby Wooley was born April 10, 1921 in Erick, Oklahoma. Before co-writing the Hee Haw theme music and becoming a cast member for half the first season, he was a cowhand, singer, and actor. Among other roles, he starred in "Rawhide" & "Hoosiers." He was probably best remembered for his novelty songs including "Purple People Eater" and his work as "Ben Colder," his alter-ego.
He passed away on Sept. 16, 2003 in Nashville, TN after a long battle with leukemia.
I had the opportunity to meet Sheb Wooley a few years ago. He was a very sweet man who was thrilled when I asked for his autograph.
