"Hee Haw" wasn't Pat Buttram's claim to fame - he was best known for his role as Mr. Eustace Charleton Haney on "Green Acres" (another of my favorite shows from childhood). His distinctive country Southern accent landed him roles in many films as well as voices for animated features. You might remember him as Chief in Disney's "The Fox and the Hound."
A native of Addison, Alabama, Pat Buttram soared to fame by chance. He was visiting Chicago for the 1933 World's Fair when a WLS announcer chose him as a "typical" Southern visitor. His interview was anything but typical, and Pat's comical interpretation landed him a job on the spot. Though he portrayed a bumbling yokel, in reality he was bright and quick-witted and was a popular speaker at many conventions and functions. He died in 1994 from kidney failure and is buried in Haleyville, AL.
